01/31 - OV + The Echo + Scary Jungle Present Zaireeka Listening Party @ The Echo

What record would warrant a whole venue like The Echo being utilized in order to listen to it? That's right, you got it, it's The Flaming Lips "Zaireeka," and we are proud to be presenting this show along with our homies The Echo and Scary Jungle.

"Zaireeka" is a collection of four records the band put out that are meant to be listened to simultaneously in order to hear the 10 tracks that comprise the album. It's a pretty difficult process in order to listen to this album, so big ups to the crew at The Echo that have the technology and steady hands to pull of a procedure like this.

If that isn't enough to convince you, there will be live performances from HOTT MT and Butcher Boy. Need we say more?

Tickets are available at OV for $10, so come out and join us for this kick-ass experience. Take a listen to the first song off of the album titled "Okay I'll Admit That I Really Don't Understand," but thats all we're gonna give you, because we want to see you jamming out with us!

Tonight 1/29 @ 7pm: Radar Brothers "Eight" Record Release Party

Taco Tuesdays? Forget it, brother! We're flippin' the script on you with pizza and bevies tonight at 7pm for the release of Radar Brothers' newest LP titled "Eight"(Merge). As an added treat, the guys are also going to be doing a little performance for all of us, so you're not going to want to miss this jam packed night.

The appropriately titled eighth studio album by these LA natives is impressive because of the divergence from the sound that Radar Brothers fans are used to. The melodic/slowcore sound of their previous album "The Illustrated Garden" gets some added gloominess with the addition of three new members who help produce The Radar Brothers "...darkest, hardest rocking, most psychedelic, and yet most intensely personal album to date."

Take a listen to their newest single "If We Were Banished," a simultaneously spooky and dreamy track that makes us at OV feel warm and fuzzy inside.

The Radio Kills In-Store Tonight 1/26 @ 7pm

36th President of the United States Lyndon B. Johnson once said: "Every man has a right to a Saturday night bath." Have you had your bath yet? Why not come down to OV tonight, where were serving up a blood-bath courtesy of the face-melting sounds of The Radio Kills.

Their newest record "The Devil You Know" is a collection of "...songs to be screamed in sweaty bars, to take you through the night in long car rides with the windows down and the wind in your hair at 100 mph, and to be the sounds track for all your best worst decisions." The Radio Kills is the type of band that makes me want to do a backflip on a dirt bike...thats how extreme they are.

Pre-game your Saturday night with a visit to OV at 7pm tonight to see these guys in action. Listen to the track "Dolores" below and get those power stances ready.

In-Store TONIGHT! Big Harp! 7pm

At 7pm, Big Harp rocks the loft and shows all y'all that country roots are alive and kickin' in Los Angeles!

This husband and wife Americana duo is about to freshly release their sophomore album, "Chain Letters" on Saddle Creek Records. Chris Senseney and Stefanie Drootin-Senseney have a low-key folk rustic rock vibe that's fronted by Chris' smooth baritone voice. Think a less commercial version of She & Him.

"We really built the songs around Stef's fuzz bass," says Chris. "It was kind of funny -- we were sitting around in a bedroom playing really loud with no drums, just kind of trusting that it was going to make sense once we put it all together. Hopefully we landed closer to mid-'70's Iggy Pop than Leonard Cohen this time. Really I'd like it to sound like Leonard Cohen fronting The Pixies. It doesn't though. Maybe a little. You tell us."

Why don't you tell em TONIGHT at 7pm! Check out "Waiting For Some Drunk" right here:

FOXYGEN Premiere Party Tonight! 8 PM!

At 8 PM we'll be playing Foxygen's sophomore album, We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors Of Peace & Magic (Jagjaguwar Records) in it's entirety! These dudes have been playing music since junior high and when they showed producer and musician, Richard Swift, he flipped his wig! We're stoked to hear what they've been working on - some have described this album as "the Kinks on acid." I'm pretty sure the Kinks were on acid but I'm still excited, nonetheless. Come by for pizza and drinks!

Tonight 1/20/13: Popular Culture In-Store @ 7pm

Want to turn your Sunday into a Funday?! Well if you come down to OV tonight at 7pm to see Popular Culture we guarantee you'll be in good spirits for this long MLK weekend.

There's a lot of buzz surrounding this Austin, TX native, and for all of the right reasons. His debut EP "Episodes" (Sparrowsongs) "...is a pure embrace and reflection of what ails and intrigues the human spirit. The combination of high and low end equipment used in recording creates a soundscape to mirror the balance needed to stay afloat in a young man's mind."

Peep the video for "Dandelion" below and psych yourself up for tonight!

"Sweet As..." Vintage Clothing and Accessories Opening 1/19/13 @ 5-9pm

Come party with our newest neighbors "Sweet As..." tonight as they celebrate the opening of their newest shop right here in Echo Park.

To get you psyched up for it check out the interview we conducted with shop co-owner Odessa Whitmire. Event runs from 5-9pm and you can RSVP for the event at sweetasvintage@gmail.com.

How are you doing on this unusually hot winter afternoon?

Loving it!

Lets start of by having you introduce yourself and a little bit about the shop you opened up with your friend Alex.

My name is Odessa and Alex is my best friend of 15 years. We are opening 'Sweet as..'. a boutique specializing in beautiful, one of a kind, vintage clothing and accessories.

How long have you and Alex been in the vintage clothing game?

We officially started 'Sweet as...' three years ago, by hosting private house parties and doing client appointments, but we've been obsessed with vintage since we can remember.

Is this the first shop you guys have opened?

This is the first shop we are opening together, but I had a shop before for seven years, called Some Odd Rubies. It was in the lower east side of New York and had a sister store here in Los Angeles.

Why did you guys choose Echo Park as a location for your shop?

We both have lived in Echo Park for many years and love the neighborhood. It has a very similar vibe to the lower east side of NYC.

What have some of the biggest hurdles been for you guys leading up to the opening of the shop?

Thankfully the hurdles have been few and far between and the support from everyone in the neighborhood has been amazing. We already feel a part of the community.

So we here at Origami Vinyl would love to know what you and Alex have been listening to lately. What have you gals been bumpin'?

We both have eclectic tastes and love being introduced to new music. We saw Searching for Sugarman recently and have been playing Rodriguez's album non stop while putting the shop together.

So, Saturday January 19th you guys have an shindig to celebrate the stores grand opening. What's the 411 on the event and how to attend?

The grand opening for 'Sweet as..." is Saturday from 5pm to 9pm, RSVP to sweetasvintage@gmail.com. Everyone is invited to come and celebrate the opening of our new space and shop our amazing collection of vintage clothing and accessories.

Tonight 1/19/13: Bell Gardens In-Store @ 7pm

According to Wikipedia, "Saturday (i/ˈsætərdi/ or /ˈsætərdeɪ/) is the day of the week following Friday and preceding Sunday." Interesting, right? Well it only gets better, because tonight we've got LA chamber-pop group Bell Gardens (Southern Records) coming through at 7pm, and we want to see your beautiful faces come down to OV for this awesome in-store!

"On their first full-length 'Full Sundown Assembly'...the duo utilized live instrumentation and lush arrangements to achieve startlingly cinematic results. Breathy vocals and harmonies, delicate piano melodies, swooning horns — they add up to Bell Gardens’ distinct and painterly take on West Coast psychedelia"

Take a gander at this video for "Nowhere" off of "Full Down Assembly," it's a good one. After you're done, make sure to clear your schedule, because you're coming to OV tonight baby!

TONIGHT 1/18/13: The Van Allen Belt in-store 7pm!

It's the end of another beautiful week here at casa de Origami! While you're out and about in this 78 degree January weather, stop by the loft to see The Van Allen Belt play free TONIGHT at 7pm!

The Van Allen Belt may have released Superpowerfragilis: Or How I Learned To Stop Caring And Love The Drug in 2010, but they've been busy avidly working and playing festivals such as MPMF, SXSW, Occupy Pittsburgh and more!

Peep this quick bio about Pittsburgh collective: "The Van Allen Belt is the vision of songwriter, producer, and multi- instrumentalist Benjamin K. Ferris. In 2007, he wished to emulate and re-contextualize the sentiments and sounds of classic 1960’s pop. In particular the aim was to create “honest oldies”, or songs that speak of modern day issues as heard through the monitor of 1960’s production."

This bedroom project progressively strives to be something impossible to categorize. Is it experimental pop?  Is it electronic pop? Is it even pop? Decide for yourself, homie! Listen to "The Way You Look" before you drop in TONIGHT at 7pm!

"True" is the third album from Solange, and in it she has "...concocted a sound that hews closer to late-'80s pop than the '60s Motown, retro tone of her last album, Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams." For fans of 80's era Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, and Anita Baker, we highly suggest stopping through the shop to get your R&B fix in.
