OV WEEKLY: Slow Your Roll

We're just chillin' this week in the shop. As always, there's things to do, but we're just taking it nice and slow like. Ya feel?

Monday, April 28th (that's today!)
Final Mystic Braves Residency @ The Echo!

For the last time this month, Echo Park faves and OV alums Mystic Braves take the Echo stage tonight with their patented blend of garage and psych rock! Formerly known as Blackfeet Braves, these guys have been gaining recognition within LA over the last couple years, and for good reason. The Braves craft groovy, psychedelic jams that tunnel right to pleasure centers in both your brain and your feet. Their 2013 self-titled album was one of our favorite local records of the year and we are super stoked for their newest record Desert Island which comes out later this month! So stop on by The Echo tonight at 8:30 for a kickass night of music courtesy of Mystic Braves. See you there!

Tuesday, April 29th
DIIV @ CFAER ft. Em & Steen! Record Club!

This Tuesday night, Em and Steen are furthering their plot to take over L.A with a doubleheader of DJing at DIIV in Eagle Rock and at the El Prado for Record Club. We fully support your decision to attend both because:
1. DIIV is awesome
2. EmSteen is awesome
3. Record Club is awesome

So grab some friends and L.A-hop tonight with OV! It's like a buddy cop movie but not at all.

Wednesday, April 30th

Patten In-Store!

Tonight at 7PM, we've got the uber-talented patten in our loft for a special DJ set! A London-based producer and musician, patten has been releasing forward thinking electronic music since 2006, steadily gaining buzz and fans for his play on BoC-esque experimental landscapes and intense live performances. Largely unclassifiable (and semi-anonymous), patten has been all-over the underground world map, a point demonstrated masterfully on his newest release ESTOILE NAIANT, out on Warp. We're super intrigued by the thought of his live set this Friday night and hope you can come scratch (and nod) your heads with us tonight at 7PM! See you there!

Giveaways This Week!
Connan Mockasin @ The Echoplex 5/16 - 1 pair!

Keep an eye on our Twitter/Facebook for future giveaways!

Now that we've planned your week, enjoy it like a capybara getting scratched!

IN-STORE: FIM TONIGHT @ 7PM!

Yes you read that right, we've got TWO in-stores coming your way tonight at Origami! After Washing Machines at 6PM, L.A locals FIM will be taking over the loft at 7PM!

Straight outta our hometown, FIM is an experimental art-pop quartet who came together through a mutual love for terrible horror movies and challenging music. Creating the latter but colored by the former, FIM (which means end in Portuguese) released their latest EP Alien Dance Party last July, calling forth comparisons to Ween and Ariel Pink in the same sentence. While we'll refrain from attempting to find an adjective that encompasses both those comparisons and their unique sound, we can tell you that these guys' music kicks ass and we can't wait to have them play in our loft.

So swing by OV tonight at 6PM, catch Washing Machines and then prepare yourselves for the experimental confections of FIM! That's 2 full hours of homegrown tunes! While you wait, check out Alien Beach Party track "Love Die" below! See you tonight!

IN-STORE: Washing Machines TONIGHT @ 6PM!

Tonight we've got Washing Machines up in our loft at 6PM!

Charging through the L.A underground scene like a hurricane, Washing Machines are on the warpath to bigger and better things.
Sounding like a Frankenstein mix of early 90s grunge and the emotive heart of post-punk, these locals have been garnering steady praise for their rough-around-the-edges live shows and unrelenting sonic attack. Their latest EP, Quick Fix, finds the band honing their "Sonic Youth meets Pixies" sound and we can't wait to hear the carnage that ensues. We're even more excited to hear it live in our loft and hope y'all can make it to jam with us!

As always, tonight's show starts at 6PM, so take a quick gander at the sunset and then roll on down to Origami for some good tunes and good times! While you wait, give a listen to their EP track "Gashzilla" below! See you soon!

SIGNING EVENT: William Basinski "Melancholia" Release Party @ 3pm, Sunday

Originally released a year after the increasingly iconic The Disintegration Loops, a decade later Melancholia still stands as William Basinski's second most beloved album. This Sunday, William Basinski will be at Origami to commemorate its 10-year anniversary re-release and to present the first-ever vinyl edition of this otherworldly piece of music.

Like many of Basinski's most soul-stirring works, Melancholia began as a series of short tape loops captured in the early 1980s. Basinski then stored them away for decades, revisiting them at a different time in his life, at which point they took on a stunning new sound all their own – one that many consider to be among the finest of the past decade.

Join Origami Vinyl and William Basinski for a special signing event this Sunday, April 27th at 3pm and get your copy of the record early.

OV PRESENTS: The Times @ Ace Hotel DTLA!

Hi Friends!

OV is very excited to announce a new weekly DJ night at Upstairs at Ace Hotel that Neil will be participating in! It kicks off Friday, May 2nd and will happen every Friday night thereafter!

The concept of the night was birthed when Neil spoke on a vinyl collecting panel with his good buds The Gaslamp Killer from Low End Theory, DJ Soft Touch from Funky Sole, and Chris Ziegler from LA Record. Their collective passion for records and turning people on to music inspired them to find a way to make this magic happen more regularly. At the same time The Ace Hotel in DTLA and Neil were talking about doing some sort of DJ night on their rooftop bar.

The goal was to try and bring together 8 people with the same passion for music and would cover a diverse landscape of sounds and culture. The 8 residents would rotate 2 at a time on a weekly basis and the idea would be that no pair would be the same until the rotation was complete. This means they could have 28 different pairings each week!

The 8 DJs are:
- The Gaslamp Killer, Brainfeeder recording artist and Low End Theory co-founder
- Nick Waterhouse, Pres/Innovative Leisure recording artist and producer
- Chris Ziegler, co-founder and editor/publisher of indie music mag LA Record
- Steve Harrington, psychedelic artist and co-founder of design firm National Forest
- Brian Shimkovitz, curator of the Awesome Tapes From Africa blog and record label
- Mark 'Frosty' McNeill, co-founder and creative director of online radio station dublab
- Clifton Weaver a.k.a. DJ Soft Touch, Funky Sole and Club Rubbish resident
- Neil Schield, owner and founder of Origami Vinyl, a record shop in Echo Park

Neil & co. be kicking things off on May 2nd and all 8 DJs will be there throwing down sets! Steve Harrington and National Forest will be giving out a limited edition artist print on opening night as well, so be sure to get there early!

The night is free entry, 21+, and goes from 9pm 'til 2am
Follow The Times on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram @origamivinyl #thetimesofla #acedtla

Hope to see you all there!

IN-STORE: Incan Abraham TONIGHT @ 7PM!

Tonight at 7PM, we've got our homies Incan Abraham throwing down jams up in the loft!

Friends since kindergarten, the members of Incan Abraham channel their multifaceted past in their debut LP Tolerance, fusing Lost Boys tribal energy with guitar, synth, and harmony vocal soundscapes that entice and hypnotize. After extended periods apart, Incan Abraham reunited last year to write their newest LP in upstate New York, recapturing friendship and youthful energy in one fell swoop. Now back in Los Angeles and fresh off the heels of the release of Tolerance (which we totally dug when they were in the shop a few months ago), these awesome guys will be sharing their sound for all to hear tonight at 7PM!

So come on down to Origami tonight and let the sweet, sweet sounds of Incan Abraham wash over you. It'll feel good, we promise. Get a little taste of tonight's aural feast via Tolerance single "Concorde" below!

OV PRESENTS: Upset + The Lovely Bad Things TONIGHT @ The Satellite!

It's Friday! That means it's time to celebrate another week gone by and OV's got your Friday night party with Upset & The Lovely Bad Things tonight at The Satellite!

For the past few years, Ali Koehler has been best known as the drummer of the pop group Best Coast and the noisy girl punk trio Vivian Girls. After her departure from Best Coast, Koehler decided to step up from behind the kit to front a band of her own, embracing her melodic punk-spirited songwriting impulses with Upset. Their newest LP, She's Gone, (an OV 2013 fave) is a pop-punk album that immediately sounds classic, full of unshakeable hooks and the sincerest of shouts. We've been digging She's Gone ever since it came out last year and we can't wait to hear these girls rip it up tonight at 9PM!

Opening for Upset is another once of our favorite local bands, The Lovely Bad Things! A 2013 favorite, we can't wait to see them shred with Upset tonight at the Satellite!

So do Friday night right tonight at The Satellite! It's gonna be a kickass time, especially if you're there with us!

RSD Leftovers! Record Club!

Missed out on RSD? Well OV's got your back, cuz we're gonna be stocking some RSD leftovers throughout the week! While some releases are truly sold out, we'll definitely have a few releases that sold out early Saturday morning for you to snag! Check back later this week for a list, but we think you'll be able to find RSD releases from Childish Gambino, Little Dragon, Anamanaguchi & more!

Once you grab those last few RSD releases, why not show 'em off to the world tonight at Record Club? We're gonna be spinning all night long at El Prado and would love to see some of those RSD rarities make an appearance! We know you wanna show your hard-earned wax off, so stop by and jam with us!

Wednesday, April 23rd
FYF Presents OFF! + Cerebral Ballzy @ The Roxy

Get that mid-week frustration out with us tonight when OFF! takes the stage at The Roxy. We're gonna be going at it hard and hope you can join us! We won't say anymore because we're not allowed to talk about OFF! for any longer than one of their songs.

Thursday, April 24th
Last Chance to Pre-Order Wye Oak's Shriek!

So beat the demand and secure your copy of Shriek today in our online store!

Incan Abraham In-Store!

Tonight at 7PM, we've got our homies Incan Abraham throwing down jams up in the loft! Saturday, April 26th
An In-Store Double Feature: Washing Machines & FIM!

Because we are crazy, we booked two in-stores for tonight and hope you can handle two hours of kickass music tonight at 6PM!

First up, we've got L.A locals Washing Machines tearing up our loft at 6PM! Sounding like a Frankenstein mix of early 90s grunge and the emotive heart of post-punk, these locals have been garnering steady praise for their rough-around-the-edges live shows and unrelenting sonic attack. A perfect way to start any evening.

Following them, FIM will be laying down their experimental art-pop at 7PM! A quartet who came together through a mutual love for terrible horror movies and challenging music, FIM (which means end in Portuguese) released their latest EP Alien Dance Party last July, calling forth comparisons to Ween and Ariel Pink in the same sentence. Which we gotta hear live, because that almost sounds impossible.

So get them ears ready for a night of good music and we'll see you here at 6PM!

Now that we've planned your week, take a nap dude -- you deserve it!

RELEASE PARTY: Courtney Barnett "The Double EP: A Sea Of Split Peas" TONIGHT @ Record Club!

Tonight we've got a super special edition of Record Club coming your way courtesy of Courtney Barnett! As part of the release of her newest double EP A Sea Of Split Peas on Mom + Pop, Courtney will be stopping by Record Club to hang and spin her newest record with us!

After years toiling away as a guitarist in other-people’s bands, Courtney Barnett finally gained the courage to step out as a solo artist less than two years ago. Gathering together a bunch of like minded friends, she recorded two EPs of rambling garage pop and began her auspicious career as a front-woman. Both EPs garnered considerable praise at home and abroad, and Courtney quickly moved from LP credits to article headlines across the likes of Stereogum, Pitchfork and CoS. With the increase in demand for her two EPs, Courtney released both EPs as A Sea Of Split Peas abroad earlier this year and now the time has come for the U.S release via Mom + Pop! We've been itching to get out hands on A Sea Of Split Peas ever since it first graced our ears and absolutely can't wait to hear it at Record Club!

Alongside spinning A Sea Of Split Peas, we'll also have the record on sale and the first 30 purchases will score you a FREE DRINK! So come on down, hang with Courtney, throw us a couple high fives, and get an awesome peek into the world of Courtney Barnett! While you wait, check out Courtney's video for her single "Avant Gardener" below! See you soon!

After years toiling away as a guitarist in other-people’s bands, Courtney Barnett finally gained the courage to step out as a solo artist less than two years ago. Quickly garnering rave reviews for her first two EPs, Courtney released both EPs as A Sea Of Split Peas abroad earlier this year and now the time has come for the U.S release via Mom + Pop! We've been itching to get out hands on A Sea Of Split Peas ever since it first graced our ears and absolutely can't wait to hear it at Record Club tonight!

Alongside spinning A Sea Of Split Peas, we'll also have the record on sale and the first 30 purchases will score you a FREE DRINK! So come on down, hang with Courtney, throw us a couple high fives, and get an awesome peek into the world of Courtney Barnett!

Just say NO To New Releases!

We've really only got one thing on our mind for new releases this week and that's the brand new pressing of NO's newest album El Prado! We've been giddy with excitement ever since El Prado came out earlier this year, but now that we can finally get our hands on the band's newest physical release we are over the moon. We expect this baby to roll out of the shop quick so you better come by and pick it up before we can say no to you!

Record Store Day Is Here!

Where do we even begin? Today is gonna be absolutely crazy so we're just gonna get right down to it and break down today's awesomeness.

Pink Mountaintops @ 8pm
We are beyond excited to welcome Pink Mountaintops in for an acoustic performance. Stephen McBean, who is part of Black Mountain, moved down to Echo Park a couple of years ago and has become a good friend of the shop. This is an in-store we’ve been working on for quite some time and are stoked to finally have it come together. His new album, “Get Back”, comes out on April 29th on Jagjaguwar and this will be the first show for that release. Listen to “North Hollywood Microwaves” (which features Annie Hardy of Giant Drag) off the new album below!

Juan Wauters @ 7pm
Juan Wauters, whom you may also know from the garage-folk band The Beets, recently released his debut solo album, “North American Poetry” on Captured Tracks and we’ve been rocking it hard. This in-store is bound to make Emily and Christine go googoo gaga all night long! Check out the incredible song “Sanity” below!

IN-STORE: Plague Vendor TONIGHT @ 5PM!

Tonight at 5PM we've got Plague Vendor performing in our loft!

Straight out of Whitter, we first heard about these dudes earlier this month and we were so blown away we had to have them perform as part of our OV Birthday Bash. Featuring a raw rock sound replete with driving drums, snarling guitars and infectious bass lines, Plague Vendor got us moving and sweaty real quick. Headed by emotive frontman Brandon Blaine, Plague Vendor has been tearing up local joints in support for their new LP Free To Eat and we were lucky to snag them again after their killer set at our bday.

So come on down to OV tonight at 5PM and see the meteorological event that is a Plague Vendor hurricane! Things are gonna get crazy. While you wait for the chaos, give a listen to Plague Vendor's most recent single "Black Sap Scripture" below!
