OV WEEKLY: That Week Before The 3-Day Weekend

We're taking a breather here at OV. June was exhausting man. But we are so ready for July, or at least we will be after our nap. Enjoy the Weekly while we hit the snooze!

Monday, June 30th
Joel Jerome & Babies On Acid Residency @ The Echo!

Recent converts to the fight against June Gloom, Joel Jerome & Babies On Acid are here to save your Monday nights with their June residency at The Echo! Self-described as "experimental thriftstore folk," Joel & company focus their collective cosmic forces on songwriting and melody with dynamic arrangements and trans-genre instrumentation that are like, way catchy. Hailing from the South Bay and flitting between a mishmash of genres and styles, these dudes pound out pop hooks and rhythms that'll rocket them up every mixtape you make from now until forever. We dig their stuff and thing you will too, so come get all comfy-psych with us tonight at The Echo! We can shimmy or shamble or just chill all night long!

Tuesday, July 1st
New Releases Are What A New Month Needs! Record Club @ El Prado!

It's now officially July, so we think you should fill up on your monthly allotment of LPs at your earliest convenience. Our recommendations this week include a limited edition release of Cloud Nothings Here And Nowhere Else and some awesome classic rock reissues courtesy of Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. We're gonna keep the rest a secret for now, but come Tuesday morning they can all be yours!

Once you've filled your July LP allotment, come on down to El Prado tonight for Record Club! As always, the first Tuesday of every month is 7" night, so we're doubly excited to see what awesome music y'all have in store for us! To make things even sweeter, we've got a stupid amount of tickets to give away over the next couple weeks. We don't wanna give everything away, but you can expect giveaways for artists like Anamanguchi, Fucked Up, The Hold Steady and many, many more. It's gonna be a crazy couple weeks!

Thursday, July 3rd
Reigning Sound @ Bootleg Theatre!

Gone for 5 years after the release of their excellent 2009 LP Love & Curses, Reigning Sound have returned and will be rocking us hard tonight at the Bootleg! Alive again after the announcement of their new record Shattered, we're super stoked to hear their Brit-soul garage mashups once again and we'll be doing our best rock 'n' roll tough guy impressions near the back. Come slap us a high five and then let's go dance to some Reigning Sound!

Friday, July 4th
3-Day Weekend Or Bust!

In order to properly celebrate our independence, OV will be closed today. However, if your patriotism involves purchasing records as much as possible, perhaps our online shop could be of service. Either way, enjoy your BBQs and fireworks!

Saturday, July 5th
Peter Murphy @ El Rey!

We're always down for some Bahaus and Peter Murphy, so you know we're gonna be all over the El Rey tonight when the Godfather of Goth himself takes the stage! Touring in support of his newest album Lion (not an animal we'd normally associate with Peter..), we hope you can make it out to the El Rey tonight for some dark, dark fun with us. A perfect way to correct yesterday's over-exuberance.

Sunday, July 6th
Amen Dunes In-Store @ 5PM!

Damon McMahon, the New York-based brain behind Amen Dunes will be playing material from his newest LP, Love, off of Sacred Bones Records in our loft tonight at 5PM. For those astrologically inclined, McMahon says Love is “very virgo.” But just when you think you can label the album a chill, folk record, MacMahon throws sparse piano ballads (“Sixteen”) and lo-fi, post-punk chuggers (“I Can’t Dig It”) at you to mix things up. We love the record and we are so excited to see what curveballs Amen Dunes will be throwing up in our loft tonight! The show gets started at 5, so don't be late!

Giveaways This Week!
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah @ Troubadour 8/7 - 1 ticket comes with the purchase of CYHSY's newest LP Only Run!

Keep an eye on our Twitter/Facebook for future giveaways!

Now that we've planned your week, get those lawnchairs prepared for a much-deserved long weekend.

IN-STORE: Slow Club TONIGHT @ 5pm!

Help us give the warmest of welcomes to Slow Club who will be coming all the way from the U.K. for an in-store at 5pm!

The Sheffield natives and multi-instrumentalists, Rebecca Taylor and Charles Watson, have just released their third album, Complete Surrender, off of Wichita Recordings, and we could not be more stoked to have them coming in to share it us (and you!)
For fans of their earlier folk/experimental sounds, Slow Club have attempted a major sonic shift on Complete Surrender, delving into Motown/70's Stax sensibilities (we are so down). Watson asserts he had been listening to a lot of Michael Jackson and Marvin Gaye at the time of writing and recording.

The record was apparently written in a pool-house hideaway in Stroud, and despite the different direction Slow Club is taking, they claim it was a completely natural shift. Watson stated, “A lot of these songs are just us playing them live as opposed to on the last record where we didn’t really do it like that...It was fun at the time but we’ve had two more people in the band now so having more people play the songs on stage definitely changes your perception of how the band could be better. It felt like we were more of a gang doing it.”

So come on in, enjoy Slow Club and pre-order Complete Surrender in-store or online here!

TED TALKS PRESENTS: TED LISTENS EP. 2

VACATIONER, "Wild Life," Relief, Downtown Records
What you know as "Intern Ted" is actually a composite of a long lineage of internships- one being sound production at The Roxy. Oh yes, when I wasn't wringing out saliva from microphone pop-screens, I was helping with the shows and meeting bands – enter Vacationer.

Here's what I remember:
  • They were remarkably calm while reprogramming ALL of their synth effects hours before the show due to a faulty SD card.
  • They stepped right off the stage and into the crowd immediately following their set - just to shoot the shit.
Their energy directly paralleled their sound. Inclusive, composed, chilled. Vacationer is post-chillwave synth-pop: sometimes with bass, sometimes with sampled material, always with clear, soaring vocals.

They just released their new LP, Relief, off of Downtown Records so I took a good listen to the single, "Wild Life."
While not sample driven, the track is just as lush and feather-light as their 2012 material. Along with showcasing the band's capacity for crafting hyper-catchy hooks, "Wild Life" particularly excels rhythmically with a dense, syncopated beat full of moving parts.
Front person, Kenny Vasoli's mantra while recording Relief is unsurprising, "relaxation." In true Vacationer fashion he recently stated, “Nothing is the end of the world until the end of the world. So you might as well enjoy this thing.” So goes the multilayered "ease" of Vacationer. The ease at which the band approaches life pairs nicely with the ease at which Vasoli effortlessly hits his crystal-tenor melodies.

IN-STORE: Yesway & Range of Light Wilderness TONIGHT @ 6PM!

Tonight at 6PM, Yesway will be performing up in our loft along with The Range of Light Wilderness!

Gauzy, hypnotic and intimate, Yesway's self-titled debut is the work of two Bay area experimental folk mainstays, Emily Ritz and Kacey Johansing. Backed by vibraphonist Andrew Maguire, Emily and Kacey layer their powerhouse vocals over slithering compositions, creating a mix of avant-garde and vocal virtuosity that calls to mind Dirty Projectors gone folk. Spurred by a recent move out of the city into sleepy NorCal beach towns, Yesway perfectly embodies the mystic swirl of coastal fog and powerful waves that surround their practice spaces. On tour supporting their newest LP Yesway, we are so excited to see these two ladies tear it up in our loft tonight!

BUT beforehand, check out a set by The Range of Light Wilderness! The Range of Light exist to make you feel like that old beach blanket in your trunk might really be a magic carpet. Featuring hushed and melodically magical folk-pop, their music invites you take that blanket and go for a sandy ride in the sky. Born from afternoons in Big Sur, The Range of Light Wilderness will be taking us on moonlight journey tonight at 6PM. Which sounds goddamn wonderful.

While the fun gets started at 6PM, feel free to get your groove going early with Yesway's first single "Howlin' Face" below! See you soon!

OV PRESENTS: Sharon Van Etten TONIGHT @ El Rey!

We are stoked to team up with Goldenvoice to present Sharon Van Etten tonight at the El Rey!

Bouncing between bases in Tennessee, Brooklyn and New Jersey, we’ve heard Van Etten’s voice collaborate with the Antlers, Megafaun, Pickwick and even get free with the Mike Reed Trio. All the while, she has managed to release four records of her own and is currently touring her fourth release, Are We There, off of Jagjagjuwar. We’ve come to know Van Etten as our emotional advocate - the sweet voice behind the bitter medicine that reminds us, “Sometimes things are messed up and that’s alright, so what’s next.” Interviews about Are We There abound with words like “cope” and “catharsis.” This makes sense, since Van Etten claims, “When I sit down and write…I’m going through shit and it’s my therapy for myself.” Therapy is another one of her buzzwords – the singer songwriter swears therapist will be her next job title after she gives up on singer songwriter.

Are We There is as beautiful as it is brooding, encompassing the strange tension of willing fragility that comes with love. The quixotic, the romantic and the brutal align with Van Etten’s sinuous, often tremulous vocal - all veiled beneath piano ballad and folk rock sensibilities. So come on out to the El Rey at 9:00. You’ll dig the show.

OV PRESENTS: The Times w/ The Gaslamp Killer & Neil Schield @ Ace Hotel

It's Friday dude, and you know what that means, The Times is back Upstairs @ Ace Hotel! On the slate this week is Neil & Gaslamp, lookin' to get your groove going all night and weekend long!

The brainchild of our glorious leader, Neil Schield, ‘The Times’ brings together a diverse group of LA artists, musicians, writers, and DJs to share their favorite musical gems at the ‘creative mothership’ that is The Ace Hotel in Downtown LA. This weekly Friday event’s rotating cast includes Neil Schield himself, The Gaslamp Killer, LA Record founder Chris Ziegler, graphic artist/designer Steve Harrington, radio DJ and photographer Mukta Mohan, co-founder of dublab Mark ‘Frosty’ McNeill, rhythm & blues musician/producer Nick Waterhouse, and DJ/musician Clifton aka DJ Soft Touch. With a line up this diverse, the sounds are sure to run the gamut of nearly every genre and style created in the last one hundred years or so. These are THE TIMES!

The party gets started at 9PM dudes, so you better get all snappy looking quick!

IN-STORE: Agender TONIGHT @ 5:30PM!

Come check out Agender at 5:30PM TONIGHT in our loft!

Melbourne based synth-punk three-piece, Agender, just released their sophomore album, FIXATIONS off of Desire Records. The label describes Agender’s sound as schitzo synthy paranoid punk…I concur. Tunes like “Modern Lovers” edge on the sparse side pairing airy, treble-high synths with sneering vocals while “Mani Pedi” rubs its way into your ears with its raw guitar jangle and manic chorus. On this record, the band claims to be interested in “exploring the desperate/disparate nature of queerness, gender and sexuality and dysmorphic desire.” Frankly, I applaud them for putting such sensitive and relevant subject matter on the table!

So come hang out and dig this in-store performance tonight at 5:30PM and in the meantime, check out “Modern Lovers” below!

OV PRESENTS: Bleached @ the Echoplex TONIGHT!

Bleached is coming to the Echoplex tonight at 8pm courtesy of OV + iheartcomix! They’ll be joined by fellow Southern Californian warriors, Zig Zags, Audacity and L.A. Witch!

Sister duo, Bleached, have been touring material from their debut 2013 LP, Ride Your Heart. Partly made in the SF Valley and part in Echo Park, the record is some darn good, pepped-up post-punk. Its bright and rowdy sound gathers up the best parts of an L.A. sunrise and sunset and screams across your eardrums. Sibling vibes shine through in the pristine harmonies. Singer/guitarist Jennifer Clavin claims the record was an effort for her to say, “here are my stories, all the ups and downs, of falling in love and it being so crazy.”

Zig Zags attest that there were forged within “the Bermuda Triangle between sci-fi and lo-fi and no-budget.” Heavy and unrelenting, their clutch to the coattails of such giants as Kiss and Sabbath is evident in the best ways. The man and myth, Ty Segall, produced their upcoming self-titled release.

L.A. Witch and Audacity bring more garage-punk vibes to the table. Origami intern Ted particularly recommends checking out “Couldn’t Hold a Candle” from their 2013 LP, Butter Knife.

And so it begins - a weekend of pure OV-awesomeness. Check out the crazy below.

Melbourne based synth-punk three-piece, AGENDER, just released their sophomore album, Fixations off of Desire Records and are celebrating by rocking our shop tonight at 5:30PM! Their label describes AGENDER’s sound as schitzo synthy paranoid punk and we concur. Tunes like “Modern Lovers” edge on the sparse side, pairing airy, treble-high synths with sneering vocals while “Mani Pedi” rubs its way into your ears with its raw guitar jangle and manic chorus. We dig it. Check 'em out with us tonight at 5:30!

After AGENDER, head on down to the Echoplex at 8PM to catch Bleached, Zig Zags & Audacity!
Authors of last year's awesome LP Ride Your Heart, Bleached make darn good, pepped-up post-punk that'll get you sweaty quick. Featuring bright and rowdy guitars that gather up the best parts of an L.A. disposition, we're so proud to present these awesome girls set tonight at the Echoplex! You'll catch us in the back doing our rock 'n' roll thing. Feel free to join us and slap some high fives!

Saturday, June 28th
Yesway + The Range Of Light Wilderness In-Store @ 6PM! OV Presents Sharon Van Etten @ El Rey!

And the hits keep on coming!

Things get started at OV tonight at 6PM, when Yesway & The Range of Light Wilderness bestow our loft with their crazy good folk-goodness!

First up, The Range of Light Wilderness exist to make you feel like that old beach blanket in your trunk might really be a magic carpet.

Not one to stop a magic carpet ride, Yesway's set afterwards looks to continue the good vibes their gauzy and hypnotic sounds. The band's self-titled debut is the work of two Bay area experimental folk mainstays, Emily Ritz and Kacey Johansing. Backed by vibraphonist Andrew Maguire, Emily and Kacey layer their powerhouse vocals over slithering compositions, creating a mix of avant-garde and vocal virtuosity that calls to mind Dirty Projectors gone folk. On tour supporting their newest LP, Yesway, we are so excited to see these two ladies tear it up in our loft alongside The Range of Light Wilderness!

After that, OV is presenting Sharon Van Etten at the El Rey! Holy moly!

We’ve come to know Sharon Van Etten as our emotional advocate - the sweet voice behind the bitter medicine that reminds us, “Sometimes things are messed up and that’s alright, so what’s next.” This sentiment comes through in spades throughout her newest LP, Are We There, which is as beautiful as it is brooding, encompassing the strange tension of willing fragility that comes with love. Sharon's always been a fave in the OV shop, so we're extra stoked to see what she'll bring tonight when she takes over the El Rey! Speaking of which, we're probably gonna need a shoulder to cry on during SVE's set, so we'd be real happy if you were there to support us. Please?

Sunday, June 29th
Woman's Hour Album Premiere Party @ 1PM!

Woman's Hour are not your average band. The first clue comes in the name of the London-based swoon-pop four-piece, taken from a beloved female-focused news and culture show on BBC Radio 4. The second is in their graphic, striking monochrome visuals, meticulously curated in collaboration with TATE and MOMA certified artists Oliver Chanarin and Adam Broomberg. These visuals play with shape and texture, much like their powerful, iridescent music. Calling to mind the intricate construction of The xx and the shimmer of summer-defining indie pop, we can't wait to premiere these UK maestros' newest album Conversations before its release July 14th! So come grab a glimpse of the future this Sunday at OV when we break Woman's Hour to U.S ears! See you at 1PM!

Giveaways This Week!
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah @ Troubadour 8/7 - 1 ticket comes with the purchase of CYHSY's newest LP Only Run!

Keep an eye on our Twitter/Facebook for future giveaways!

Now that we've planned your week, get some sleep so you can go crazy this weekend with us! OV heartily endorses naps.

TED TALKS PRESENTS: TED LISTENS EP. 1

MANIFESTO
So here’s the deal - to combat Neil’s slew of remarkably tasteful “Ted Talks” jokes, I’ve determined the best course of action is a weekly dose of subversion. Ouch, interns bite back. I bring you the first installment of “Ted Listens,” in which I listen to and WRITE (not talk) about a track I am particularly stoked on.
You with me? Tight.

The Antlers, “Hotel”, Familiars, (ANTI-)
Welcome to Familiars, the Antler’s 5th release in which they’ve traded heartbreak for inner peace without losing any of the haunt we love.
“Hotel” grooves hard. Within the first 10 seconds the keys, bass, and drums sew themselves into a fierce pocket that just doesn’t quit until the end.
Halfway in, I’m thinking I’ve got the hang of it when suddenly everything becomes suspended; drums minimize to downbeat ride hits while the once punchy, rhythmic keys morph into a legato, jazz-like layer upon which the vocals and horns lightly waft.
Oh man, oh boy.
The faintest hint of an organ begins to reveal itself, eventually swelling to a gospel feel around 3:35 that slays as a complement to Silberman’s devastatingly lowkey guitar solo to close out the track.
Apparently, much of the album was inspired by the zen-buddhist, "bardo", or “between state” after death and before rebirth which manifests in “Hotel’s” lyrics exploring the hotel as existential waiting room; self, anonymity, the wrestle of existence, it’s all here.
Check out the track below and pick up the LP while we still got it!

OV PRESENTS: Rodrigo Amarante TONIGHT @ Bootleg!

Need to medicate that mid-week slump? Origami and The Fold present multi-instrumentalist Rodrigo Amarante at the Bootleg tonight at 8PM!

Don’t think you know Rodrigo Amarante? Well…you probably do.
Brazilian born Amarante’s musicianship and crystal-crooning vocals have graced our ears since his since 2007 contribution to Devendra Banhart’s Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon shortly followed by his stint with indie rock darlings, Little Joy, in 2008. Speaking of which, Little Joy fans will certainly find sonic grounding on which to grip in Cavalo, Amarante’s latest LP and first solo release off of Easy Sound Recording Co. He claims to have made the album during, “an unexpected but very welcome exile” in which he was given “the opportunity to re-cognize [his] nature.” This quest for true nature is evident. The tunes oscillate between groove-pop sung in English (“Hourglass”), to Portuguese piano ballads (“Cavalo”) and buoyant, Brazilian lullabies of intimate vocal/nylon string duets (“Irene”). Fans of Devendra’s sound will rejoice. Rodrigo will not disappoint, and neither should you! So get over to Bootleg and listen with us tonight at 8PM!

OV Presents Rodrigo Amarante @ Bootleg Theatre! Chad VanGaalen + Paul Bergmann @ The Echo!

Need to medicate that mid-week slump? OV's got options plenty. First up, Origami + The Fold present Rodrigo Amarante tonight at the Bootleg!

Don’t think you know Rodrigo Amarante? Well…you probably do. Brazilian-born Amarante’s musicianship and crystal-crooning vocals have graced our ears since his since 2007 contribution to Devendra Banhart’s Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon shortly followed by his stint with indie rock darlings, Little Joy, in 2008. Rodrigo will not disappoint, and neither should you! So get over to Bootleg and listen with us tonight at 8PM!

Also playing tonight are OV faves Paul Bergmann & Chad VanGaalen at The Echo!

Back in January, Paul Bergmann played our little loft and blew us away with his potent voice and country stylings so much that we've been following him all over L.A ever since. Now opening for the supremely talented Chad VanGaalen (whose new record Shrink Dust, is just divine), we can't wait to see what this duo can do on The Echo stage and hope you can join us for a night of great music! As always, tickets are for sale here in the shop! See you there!

Friday, June 20th
Yann Tiersen + NO @ The Fonda! Mystery Friday Post???

The most important part of every weekend is starting it correctly, and thanks to NO & Yann Tiersen, it looks like this weekend is going to be awesome! Opening up the night, OV man Sean Stenzie will be hypnotizing the Fonda stage alongside NO, and we fully expect to swoon every time he looks at us. He's so dreamy. Afterwards, musical legend Yann Tiersen will be playing songs from his newest album Infinity plus all of those songs you put on when you want to feel really worldly. We seriously can't wait.

Also going down this Friday, OV intern Ted will be taking over the blog for a "Ted Talk." We are mystified, giggling and REALLY EXCITED. Check the blog Friday for the full spiel!

Giveaways This Week!
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah @ Troubadour 8/7 - 1 ticket comes with the purchase of CYHSY's newest LP Only Run!

OV PRESENTS: Sharon Van Etten @ the El Rey, JUNE 28

We are stoked to team up with Golden Voice to present Sharon Van Etten, June 28 at the El Rey!
Bouncing between bases in Tennessee, Brooklyn and New Jersey, we’ve heard Van Etten’s voice collaborate with the Antlers, Megafaun, Pickwick and even get free with the Mike Reed Trio. All the while, she has managed to release four records of her own and is currently touring her fourth release, Are We There, off of Jagjaguwar.
So come on out to the El Rey on the 28th. You’ll dig the show.

How could you possibly have a bad Monday with that face? We haven't been able to, and with another edition of OV Weekly, things are going pretty darn good.

Monday, June 9th
Joel Jerome & Babies On Acid Residency @ The Echo!

Recent converts to the fight against June Gloom, Joel Jerome & Babies On Acid are here to save your Monday nights with their June residency at The Echo! New Releases Please! Record Club!

Things are feeling rather special on the new release front. Which is probably cause we've got a slew of limited edition swag in stock that'll be ready for consumption tomorrow morning! You'll have to check the blog for the full deets, but it'll be worth it. Speaking of limited edition, if you want some special stuff now, there's plenty in our online shop.

Once you pick up all that kickass vinyl, why not bring it to Record Club tonight at El Prado? As always, we're gonna be playing your LPs all night long and would love to see some limited stuff to come through. Just so we can be cool like y'all. Plus we'll be giving away tickets to Yip Deceiver at The Roxy!

Wednesday, June 11th
Eels + Chelsea Wolfe @ Orpheum Theatre!

Remember when we had all that crazy mint Eels wax in? We still have dreams about it here in the shop, but nothing really compares to seeing Mark Everett and company live. Which is why you'll find us crying silently and happily at the Orpheum Theatre when the Eels roll through L.A tonight! Especially because the amazing Chelsea Wolfe will be opening and there's the possibility of a Steve Perry sighting. Ugh, we're just a bundle of emotions over here.

IN-STORE: Dub Thompson TONIGHT @ 5PM!

Tonight at 5PM, Dub Thompson performs up in our loft!

Natives of Agoura Hills, you wouldn't normally associate the trippy psych-garage sounds of Dub Thompson with their place of origin, but guitarist Matt Pulos and drummer Evan Laffer don't mind. Their brand of music exists in another plan of existence anyways. Mixing ground-n-pound garage sensibilities with heady krautrock compositions, these dudes make rangy, grimy rock songs that we just can't enough of. Touring in support of their newest album 9 Songs (Dead Oceans) we're super excited to have Dub Thompson up in our loft tonight at 5PM!

So stop on by the store tonight and experience some out-of-this-world music courtesy of Dub Thompson! If you can't wait that long, give a listen to the band's newest single "No Time" below! See you soon!

OV PRESENTS: Thieves TONIGHT @ EAT|SEE|HEAR!

You know those moments when you and your cool friends are like, “Man, we should see a concert tonight.” but then you’re like, “Nah, lets just stay in and dig on some old school Wes Anderson.” And then you both just sit and groan in your own hipness until the night’s over? You ever have those? It’s tough, but Origami is here. Tonight OV is presenting Thieves & Wes Anderson's Rushmore at EAT|SEE|HEAR!

EAT|SEE|HEAR’s mission is collecting all of your summer weekend desires in one spot: food trucks, bands and outdoor cinema. Here’s how it works: Doors open at 5:30pm, Thieves start playing at 7pm, and then a screening of Rushmore starts at 8:30pm!

Thieves are an Echo-park based five-piece specializing in indie rock that is at once twinkling and buoyant. Their catchy, helium filled hooks will perk your ears and lift your spirits. Plus, check the e-bow usage on “Freeways!”

It all happens at The Autry in Griffith Park (4700 Western Heritage Way Los Angeles, CA 90027). Check the event website for more info on ticketing and parking. In the mean time, here's some Thieves!
