TONIGHT: Altamont Apparel presents Drawlings (Abby Portner) in-store @ 7pm

Tonight! Free in-store with Drawlings! 7pm! Free! At Origami Vinyl! Drawlings is the solo music project of Abby Portner, sister of Animal Collective's founding member David Portner (Avey Tare). Having been a member of bands Rings and Hex Message, Abby started Drawlings in summer 2008 as a way to relate her art with music and to express herself in a more personal way. Since inception, Drawlings has recorded a 7" titled "Be Good to Earth This Season" and was a featured performer at the UK's All Tomorrow's Parties festival last May.

Besides music, Portner is most notable for her visual artwork - more particularly with Animal Collective and other Paw Tracks artists. Abby is responsible for the artwork on multiple AnCo releases and Avey Tare's Down There" full-length. In addition, Portner has also designed posters and merchandise for the band and, in 2011, contributed the music video for Animal Collective's MPP song, "In Flowers." Abby has recently designed some sweet merch for Altamont and we're having this fun in-store in celebration! Come on down for some Drawlings action TONIGHT! See you at 7pm.

So we've got this in-store later today that you should definitely check out. Independent rock group, So Wrong, will be paying the loft a visit tonight at 7pm!! The four-piece consists of members and Los Angeles locals Nosebleed (yes, Nosebleed), Cory King, Brandon, and Sean Mutts. So Wrong's style can be described as pop-influenced punk rock with a dash of shoegaze and synth. This is definitely the result of the group's listed influential artists, which include the likes of Nirvana, The Rolling Stones, Joy Division, Johnny Thunders, The Ramones, Sisters of Mercy, The Smiths, and the Jesus and Mary Chain.

So Wrong released their debut self-titled LP late last year on Antifiesta Records. The vinyl will be available at the in-store for purchase and can be streamed at the link below. Come on down tonight!! 7pm!! The owls are not what they seem...

Steve Harrington For Generic Surplus Shoe Release Party TONIGHT!

My good friend and Origami Vinyl contributor (He's designed the next Origami Vinyl artist series tee-shirt) Steven Harrington has designed a shoe for LA-based shoe company Generic Surplus. There will be an epic release party for the shoe TONIGHT @ El Chavo in Silver Lake and I, Neil Schield, will be manning the decks! In addition there will be a live performance from HELLO TROUBLE, plus $3 cervezas & Taco Truck. The fine folks will also be giving away hand printed posters by Steven Harrington. It's gonna be epic!

Come on out! Party starts @ 8pm. Band is on around 9pm and I'll be rocking the decks from about 10pm on!

Tonight at Origami Vinyl... an exclusive listening party of Mark Lanegan Band's upcoming release, Blues Funeral! How cool would it be to be one of the first of your friends to hear the new release? Very cool. At the end of the listening, there will be a contest drawing for the test pressing of record so you can recreate the listening party fun from the comfort of your own home. Your friends will be so jealous!!!

"Blues Funeral" is the Mark Lanegan Band's first release since 2004's breakthrough record "Bubblegum." The full length is being released by the notorious 4ad label and features appearances by artists such as Josh Homme, Greg Dulli and Jack Irons. Having started his career in the 1980s, Evergreen state native, Mark Lanegan, has performed with a number of notable rock groups including Screaming Trees, Queens Of the Stone Age, The Twilight Singers, The Gutter Twins, Soulsavers and Isobel Campbell. Now playing with his own solo band, Lanegan has continued to break waters with his veteran musicianship.

TONIGHT: Mountain Man Records presents Tiny Lungs, Wild Pack Of Canaries, and Brown & Blue @ 6pm

What are you doing tonight?! Long Beach independent label, Mountain Man Records, is presenting an in-store here at the Origami Records loft and I think you should definitely come on down to check it out. The showcase is in celebration of MMR's recently released "Singles Series Volume 1," which will be available for purchase during the show. The series features 7"s from local MMR roster bands Tiny Lungs, Brown and Blue, and Wild Pack of Canaries. And guess what?? All three artists will be performing a set here at Origami! Tight!!

Labeling themselves as both "dark" and "influential," Highland Park's Tiny Lungs is the first group featured on the Singles Series. While not entirely dark in aesthetic, the band's sound certainly has roots in early emo and post-hardcore with an added spike of modern day basement pop-punk. For fans of Joyce Manor, Koalacaust (RIP), Summer Vacation, and Algernon Cadwallader.

On the other side of the musical spectrum, Brown and Blue possess a sound more characterized by American indie and folk. The group began in 2006 as a solo project of Downey teenager Danny Nogueiras and has faced multiple lineup changes since inception. Now headquartered in Long Beach, Brown and Blue released its second full-length "Second Chances" on MMR in January 2010 and has now released two tracks on their recent 7".

And lastly, Long Beach's Wild Pack of Canaries is the final band featured on the singles series. Originally a three person group, WPoC has since morphed into a six piece, with most members contributing guitar riffs to the band's experimental, upbeat sound. Comparable to LBC's own Crystal Antlers, Wild Pack of Canaries also draws influence from the psychedelic, math rock, and progressive genres.

Gorgon Zoloft is a Los Angeles based post-punk/noise-rock duo comprised of Matt Perozzi on bass and vox and Thomas Jefferson W. on drums and vox. They are dancey, fast, snotty, loud, and a spectacle to view live. Creating a wall of sound with just two members, Gorgon Zoloft creates the aural illusion that you're listening to a four-piece. Just a few months old, their Back To Nature 7" is their first release. It was recorded and produced by Zach Kasik at Electric-Morella Studios in Valley Village, CA and is released completely DIY. With only 100 pressed you don't want to miss your opportunity to purchase this 7", which includes two pins and a free digital download. Expect to see a lot more of them around the underground punk LA venues in the near future.

Tonight! A very special in-store by Los Cometas E.E.U.U. at none other than your local Origami Vinyl. Based out of Long Beach, the three-piece group features a beach-y indie punk and garage rock vibe, containing vocals sung exclusively in Spanish. The Cometas major drive, besides rocking, is to "rid the prevalence of anti-Latino politics" that has been gaining support in Los Angeles and beyond.

Los Cometas E.E.U.U. released their four-track 7" titled "¡Amor en el Panteón!" on Discos Anclas last December. The band's upbeat sound is a mirror of its many influences, including Los Saicos, Arthur Lee and Love, The Seeds, Wire, The Jam, Link Wray, & Dancing. Okay this is going to be a fun one. TONIGHT - Nicole Kidman and So Many Wizards in-store at Origami Vinyl! Two very cool artists on one very cool loft for one very cool night. Both originally based in Los Angeles, the keyboard-driven Nicole Kidman (Jon Barba) and indie-pop So Many Wizards have been making rounds on the local independent music circuit and are not to be missed. If you haven't seen either at The Smell, pehrspace, or FMLY Fest, here is your chance to catch the two for free!

Long Beach's So Many Wizards recently put out their latest seven track EP "Love Songs for When You Need Me," which comes uniquely packaged in the pages of a hardcover book. The band has a UK tour scheduled for March and will be continue playing local shows throughout Los Angeles, including a Monday night residency at The Echo in April. Nicole Kidman, now located in Oakland, has new material on the way on Funeral Home Recordings, Deathbomb Arc, and Almost Halloween Time.

Realization Orchestra formed at CalArts in Los Angeles in 2009, its members converging from several regions of the country and including members of WITT, Ty Segall, Moonhearts, Japandi, and Weatherbox. In 2011 the group released their debut, REALIZATION, an extended form composition that defies genre distinction by traversing and reshaping the disparate landscape of modern popular and unpopular styles at accelerated rates, interweaving strains of rigorously-crafted written material with soulful creative improvisation. Each musician individually navigates the structural obstacle course of the triptych suite with his own time-sound acrobatics, resulting in a group effect of constant merging and dispersal. Come out tonight to see what this mind bending band is all about!

Narnack Records and Greatminds Records released Beat LA, a very special collection of songs from classic SoCal artists performed by contemporary artists from the Los Angeles underground. Proceeds from this albums will benefit Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontiéres (MSF), and their life-saving endeavors helping those adversely affected by the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Classic songs from the likes of Wall of Voodoo, X, The Germs, and Gun Club have been covered by an eclectic selection of contemporary artists who call Los Angeles their home, including experimental electronic geekmaster Boom Bip, folk rocker Imaad Wasif, Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer and indie rock/noise pop duo No Age, among many others. All songs were donated by the artists.

Dylan Trees is a Los Angeles-based band consisting of British singer-songwriter Jeremy Simon, and long-term collaborator and chanteuse Monica Olive. Their sound has been described as "a sweet amalgam of British psych-folk drenched in sunny California dreamin'." They contributed a song by Kathy Smith called "Topanga" to the Beat LA compilation, and will be coming into our loft space to celebrate the record and play us a few little ditties. Come in at 7 pm to hear their wonderful musical stylings, and pick up this awesome compilation, it is pretty sweet and the proceeds go to Haiti! Woohoo!

Local LA musicians, Jeffertitti's Nile, are coming in for the first time to our loft space at 7pm tonight! These guys describe their music by saying "Jeffertitti's Niile is a hypnotic river of sound that encompasses the sense of it's listeners/participants. Flowing vibrations transform us to formless and timeless dimensions. For generations, scholars, specialists, humans and animals alike have pondered over how to reach this state of being. Search no further..." If you are looking for a tripped out garage, and psychedelic experience come into the store for this awesome in-store performance!

The band has released a 7" split with another local band, Dahga Bloom, on Volcom Records, which they will be promoting tonight. They also released their album, Hypnotic River of Sound, on vinyl in 2010. Both will be available for purchase in the store. On their Facebook they describe their experience in creating their album. "During a stormy week of February, 2010, a Hypnotic River of Sound was birthed in a flooding home studio, deep within Topanga Canyon, CA. Sparks & black water were spewing out of the electric sockets as member of Jeffertitti's Nile rushed to save their tape reels and instruments from washing away in a cosmic soup." We are sure glad that their work wasn't wiped away because now we can experience it live in-store tonight with all of you. It is sure to be a cosmic experience.

Echo Park Holiday Shop Hop and In-Store w/ Hepa/Titus TODAY!!!!

The Echo Park neighborhood "Holiday Shop Hop" will be held today from 10am-10pm along Sunset Boulevard and Echo Park Avenue. The shops of Echo Park started this event three years ago to create a sense of community between the stores and give our customers a day full of discounts, live music, art shows, and even something as simple as complimentary hot apple cider! We think the shop hop is a testament to how awesome the community of shops, restaurants, and businesses within the neighborhood of Echo Park and we feel very fortunate to part of this amazing event! There will also be the annual Holiday Parade from the Echo Park Chamber of Commerce from 10am to 1pm. The parade includes high school marching bands, floats, cheerleading squads, and the neighborhood Fire Department. The participating shops include Ballard's Framing, Rewind Audio, Masa of Echo Park, Stories Books & Café, City Sip, Alston Yacht Club, Origami Vinyl, Backside, and Iam8Bit just to name a few.

This evening we have Hepa/Titus playing in the shop starting at 7pm! We are keeping it local, in the spirit of the Shop Hop, by having these locals showing off their music. The band will be promoting their release of their album, "Jacket Off". We will also be giving everyone that comes in for the day a 10% discount! So make sure you come out for this awesome event to support our neighborhood and the store.

Sleeping Bags, a local LA band, is coming into our loft tonight at 7 pm! This noise shoe gaze band includes members of Kisses, Princeton, Gentle Hands, and Combat. This is a four-piece in the crossroads of noisy and fuzzy. You will hear craft jangly guitar rock in the loft tonight that will make your head spin. Come out to have a good night with some of your local record junkies!

Sleeping Bags just released their debut album, S/T this year. They will be playing tracks off of this awesome album, an album that our very own Emily put on her top 10 local albums of the year! Get excited! Coming into our loft is singer/songwriter and comic book artist, Jeffrey Lewis, at 7pm. Marking Leonard Cohen as one of his major influences, Lewis has involved his music with the anti-folk movement. Listening to his music reminds us of being rebellious in high school, and this rebellious nature is found in the lyrics that Lewis writes. He is coming all the way from New York, so come welcome him to the city by watching this in-store performance.

Jeffrey will be promoting his most recent release "A Turn In The Dream Songs" out on Rough Trade since October. He will be doing something special for us by having an intimate discussion about this new release after his performance. Lewis fills his songs with lyrical witticism and instrumental interludes on this record. We have the record in the store, and you will want to make sure you pick up one! We promise that it will enlighten with its colorful honesty.

Local Echo Parkians, Peg Leg Love, are coming into the loft space tonight! These guys have been featured on LA Record and on KXLU's Demolisten, as well as performing here at Origami Vinyl before. Pulling influence from bands like The Cramps and Gun Club, they describe their sound as death surf. Ilir Zeneli is the lyricist with buried vocals and loud strumming, Travis Moore is the drummer beating the hell out of his drums, and Susan Raygoza is the serious bassist.

They are coming in tonight to promote their record, "Peg Leg Love". They have a dark sound flirting with the haunting side of punk rock, mixed with rockabilly. You will hear pounding drums, reverb surf guitar, and a deep bass line. Come on in tonight at 7 pm to hear these guys rock out!

San Franciscan's, Foolproof Four, will be coming into our loft tonight at 7pm! The band's Facebook describes their sound: Perhaps the best way to describe Foolproof Four is by way of equation: multiply blues by jazz, add rock, divide by country, and subtract half the band (as well as most of the drum kit). The result is an intimate sound with a big presence; guitarist/vocalist Noah Grant soars while drummer Dan Brennan dials in the groove, hollering periodically to round out the mix.

The band is coming out with a new LP on apple green vinyl called "Apples Of Our Allegiance". Los Angeles band, Fonda, return from an 8 year hiatus to bring us some sweet music in the OV loft! The band fuses together classic pop hooks with noisy dreampop, calling on the influence of such early 90s bands as My Bloody Valentine, Lush and Ride. Come into the store and hear some of this 60's style indie-pop filtered through the lens of 90's era influences.

They've released a new 12" EP called "Better Days" (the opening track is the soundcloud below). Fonda has produced six new tracks of their melodic indie pop and will be sharing them with us today. Tremolo guitars and dreamy lyrics abound on this new EP. Make sure you come in and check this band out after their eight year hiatus, and pick up their new EP while you're at it!

Local Los Angeles musicians, Saint Motel, will be in the loft tonight at 8 pm! Crooked Fingers is coming into the loft today at NOON! The band, coming in from North Carolina, features Eric Bachmann, previously of Archers of Loaf. Eric scoffed at the idea of releasing a new record, but lucky for us he went against his own wishes. Mostly because he was content from teaching English in Taipei, but not long after he got there he realized his desire to write music again.

Just recently released on Merge Records, Crooked Fingers new album "Breaks In The Armor" does not disappoint! This is the sixth full length album from Eric and follows along with the style from his previous releases. You will hear Eric's distinct folk vocals with soothing backing melodies. Coming in to the loft is another local act, Raw Geronimo! The brain child of Laena Geronimo, started out in February 2011 by a collective of hyper talented musically obsessed friends, now have turned into a six-piece band. Citing obscenely vast influences from the smashing of rocks to Paganini violin solos. They enjoy sunset walks on the beach, needing out, and making people excited.

They will be coming in to promote the release of their 7" called "Faustine". Described on their myspace as jungle music, melodramatic popular songs, and post punk, we think these fit pretty well. TONIGHT: KXLU Presents Bikos @ 7pm!

Coming in tonight is local artist, Bikos! These guys started off in 2007 and have really started to get recognition for their unique sound. This band started playing out of the bedroom and garage of lead singer and rhythm guitarist, Gabe. Along the way they have added a full backing band even including someone who plays the glockenspiel. Sweet! They have an authentic sound created through the collaboration of each of the members.

This is the band's debut release called "Make Your Sound Sound". Bikos has a sound that sounds like sound. We really like the tracks "You Want It" and "Make Your Sound Sound" (both featured below). You will hear fuzzy guitar riffs, power pop girl/guy vocals and a solid dancing rhythm in each of their songs. You will not want to miss this in-store, and make sure you pick up these guys debut album to support the local scene!

TONIGHT: In-Store w/ Walking Sleep @ 7pm!

Born in 2007, Walking Sleep came to life with a purpose: cross-pollinating boy/girl vocal harmonies with classic rhythms, intricate orchestration, and curiously dark lyrics. Originally formed under the name the Flying Tourbillon Orchestra, the six-piece band came together as an extension of lead singer Hunter Curra's songwriting. Drawing influence across genres and decades, the music echoes the melancholy psychedelic pop of the Zombies, the uptempo stomp of classic Motown, and the moody melodicism of Fleetwood Mac, all twisted and reshaped through the prism of indie pop.

They will be coming into our loft tonight at 7 pm to promote their new release "Tarp Sessions" on yellow vinyl. This record was self recorded which resulted in songs that show the band experimenting inside and outside of its familiar styles. You will hear covers of various artists on this record including "Lovesong" by The Cure (featured below). Make sure you come in and see the band's take on some of their favorite songs, as well as the band's originals. The record is available now at the store. We would love to see you come by tonight!

Two weeks ago, Trevor Powers came through L.A. on the second night of his cross-country tour in support of his band Youth Lagoon, playing to a sold-out crowd at The Echo in Echo Park. Before the show, Trevor walked down two storefronts on Sunset Blvd. and into Origami Vinyl to play a short set of songs in front of a decidedly smaller (yet-still-crazy-packed) house.

His debut album out on Fat Possum Records, The Year in Hibernation landed on Pitchfork’s “Best New Music” and we can easily hear why. Described by Trevor as an outlet for fears and emotions he couldn’t otherwise express, Youth Lagoon’s first record is an at-times haunting, always gorgeous collection of tracks.

There was some question among those of us filming as to what his voice would sound like without the reverb and lo-fi production found on the record. Any doubts were completely smashed by what turned to be one of the most searing performances we’ve seen in the loft. Trevor’s got pipes, yo. Just saying.

Tonight we get to hear the musical stylings of Los Angeles locals, United Ghosts. You know when two people meet and it seems to just work? Well, that is what it was for Axel and Sha of United Ghosts. The first couple times the two met in Axel's Silverlake garage studio the two didn't even know each other's last names, but knew that they liked to make music together. With the addition of a guitarist the band is set to start making moves.

The group's first release is the 7" called "Holes Into the Night", which will be available for you guys to purchase tonight! You will hear what the band calls "shoegazy alt-rock, lo-fi electronica and soundscape-driven psychedelia." It sounds like being in a dream where you are able to fly through the galaxies. Batwings Catwings is a local LA band in the noise rock scene. Fronted by a badass girl singer, and backed by a bunch of party rockers. These guys are sure to bring a lot of energy, focused on the fun surf and skate culture of California with a twist from influences in black metal and goth culture. If you like noise rock and girl singers then you will love Batwings Catwings.

The band's most recent release is a 7" called "Radio" out on UK label Gravy Records. According to the tags on their band camp they are characterized as dance, electronic, punk, rock, sweat, Los Angeles. We think that this exactly explains the vibe you get when you hear Batwings Catwings. White Murder is a local Los Angeles with punker Siamese twin singers Hannah Blumenfield and Mary Animal and a backing band to match their steez. 5 months back they made their first attempt at a show in San Pedro that ended being drenched in beer and the twins stuffed themselves into trashcans. We like their style and we think you will too.

Their debut release is a 7" called "Harold's Place" and will be on sale at this live in-store. We liked what they had to say about their sound and stage presence: "Much like the Germs proved on GI that they could not only take a live audience to oblivion and back but also could actually play their instruments and have a (gulp!) legitimate pop sensibility, White Murder shall leave no mind wondering when they needle hits the groove. Coming into our loft from Chicago, 4-piece band Empires will be playing tonight at 6pm. With a lot of good vibes following their first album, "Howl", they recently released an EP "Bang". The band will be playing their music inspired by the independent spirit of 90s grunge with a modern alternative twist.

With the classic makings of an alternative rock band, these guys have hit the mark. Empires is characterized by strong guitar riffs, rolling drums, and a folk alternative vocalist that pushes his voice to impact the listener. Steffaloo is the project of Steph Thompson residing in Los Angeles. She pours herself into her writing, photography, art and music and presents it in a neat package. Her music allows herself to be free from the world and simply exist. Steffaloo just came back from CMJ where she performed with Chrome Sparks in the song she is featured on "Still Sleeping". This girl's got talent, so you all should come by to see her in the loft tonight at 7 pm!

From her recent EP release, "On Fire", you can expect to hear melodic harmonies, gentle acoustic guitar, and deeply entrancing lyrics. You may feel like you are going deeper and deeper into one of Steph's dreams, and will come out from it slightly more enlightened. The music isn't comprised of much, just vocals, sometimes a guitar, keyboard, or ukele, but it seems like so much more than that. Jocelyn Foye will be showcasing her art and holding an air guitar competition in conjunction with the art she has created. "Rock N' Roll, Rock N' Roll, Rock N' Roll" will feature multiple still works, and a live performance from air guitarists in the Los Angeles area. Our very own Neil will be a judge for evenings performances, and will be DJing the event. So come out! It will be a really awesome night of art and air guitar.

We've been wondering what kind of freaky stuff is going to happen on 11/11/11, so we thought we'd present this psych night at Nomad Gallery to find out together! This psych night will include one of Neil's favorite bands, The Entrance Band, as well as other psych bands, White Arrows and Highlands. The night starts at 8 pm, is 18 and up, and costs $15 at door, $12 advance in store. This will truly be a psychotic psychedelic evening. The Nomad Gallery is really rad, and Thief is doing something called "Melting Walls". Check out the Facebook Event and come out!

We can't express how excited we are to have them here and we hope you are too! Their album, Wondervisions, is extremely original and over-the-top excellent. Our intern Alyssa, has been rockin' it on repeat every time she comes in which has made all of us hooked.

Interview with NO

I sat down and had a conversation with our own Sean and his band mate, Bradley who have recently started the band, NO. We talked about burgers, LA, and feelings. Check it out!

Sean: Sup bro?
Emily: How are you guys?
Bradley: It’s nice to be here on a rainy day.
What was the best thing that you guys did today?
S: Programming synthesizers. Basically just got ready for the show coming up.
B: Sean’s quite good at figuring out how to program those devices. They’re very hard for me to get my head around and he can just go in there and like, make it sound good.
So that was the best thing about today for you…
B: Yeah basically Sean figured out how to program synthesizers
S: No wait! The best thing for today was we split a burger at the Fix Burger.
B: Oh yeah! That’s right!
What’s the Fix Burger?
S: Oh my god girl! It’s like the best burger joint.. It’s on Hyperion. It’s a few blocks from Trader Joes.
B: Yeah, forget about all that other stuff.. the best thing about today is that we split a burger at the Fix burger.
So you said you were finishing your EP?
S: It’s done. It will be out digitally this Friday! 11-11-11. It’s called Don’t Worry You’ll Be Here Forever.
So what does NO sound like?
B: It sounds like 6 songs. The best thing I heard about it so far is someone wrote that it was “post-hymnal anthematic.”
And you have a show coming up?
S: We do. On Friday the 11th we’re going to do a release party at our friend’s house! House party! If people really want to go they can email us.
B: It’s a really cool big backyard.
S: Along with our friends Future Ghosts, TS and The Past Haunts, and Dylan Trees.

S: Yay! Dylan Trees.
So, did you guys explore any specific themes on your record?
S: Everything we did was from themes. We wanted to write from themes from the beginning so we got together and talked about ideas and we had little lines that lyrically would start off an idea and we would sit down and figure out, what is the story and how do we want to tell it? For one of the songs, we were talking about how there really isn’t just a true love song for Los Angeles and so we have this idea where it’s like a love song to Los Angeles, but at the same time it’s a love song IN Los Angeles.
Do you guys love Los Angeles?
S: I do. I was raised here.
B: It’s one of those places… a few times I’ve actually tried to leave but I can never leave. It’s a hard city to break up with. I think also, it’s an ugly city… it really is. But there’s something about it when the sun sets over the city and it just glows and the whole West coast thing kicks in, it’s so beautiful. And those 4 hours of the day.. there’s something about that. I was talking to Sean about it and how there’s not really too many love songs about LA… well maybe there are but maybe we’re overlooking them.
S: Well there are but it seems like everything is either tongue in cheek or ‘Yeah I love LA BUT’… even the song I Love LA is very sarcastic. And as much as I think he [Randy Newman] does, it’s so full of this negative imagery.
B: But I think too, I’ve been through personally so many ups and downs in this city. And just when it gets really bad, it seems often that things can change and turn around and then it’s like fuck, it’s all ok again! You might have no money in the bank and overdraft fines stacking up from Bank of America (seriously, Fuck Bank of America!) But you know what I mean..I think that’s the other thing we wanted to put on the EP – because we’re all pretty broke and just trying to hang in there too. We’re just trying to create some sort of hope and something we can believe in. Things might get better soon if we just kind of keep going on. I guess there are a lot of personal experiences that just kind of came together on the EP. Finding yourself has been a big part of it for me in the last few years. You always think, ‘Oh I’m kind of there now’ and then out of the blue you realize that you’re not at all.
S: Yeah you think that you’re in a really good place. Like ‘I’ve got this and I’ve got that and I’ve got this girl” and you think that your comfort zone is very nice and something will just come in and it doesn’t even have to be all gone but your perspective changes and you’re Like ‘Oh man what am I doing this isn’t working!” and it can just change so quickly.
B: Perspective can be a real motherfucker. You know I think that’s the thing that I’ve had to just had to try to learn to keep my perspective right in every situation. Whether it’s music or making art or relationship or whatever. This city is a really hard city to be in but it’s an amazing city to be in as well. So I guess all these songs came from thoughts like that and different experiences we’ve had personally. If we’ve done our job right, hopefully someone will hear these songs and feel a bit of hope or something.
S: They’ll feel more post-hymnal.
B: And very anthematic. They’ll just want to sing in the shower. I’d like to hear people sing these songs in the shower. That would be lovely.
You actually want to be there when they’re singing these songs in the shower?
B: Well it depends who it is. I’m sure not all our listeners have great bodies..
S: God knows we don’t.
B: Yeah, they’ve got to be better than ours. I think another thing is that I grew up watching English football and I love it. The atmosphere where everyone sings and kind of comes together and the massive unity… these guys can’t even sing in tune but together, their voices make this big raw sound. That’s always kind of given me a chill and that’s another thing we tried to weave into our little web of ideas for songs and hopefully we’ve caught a little bit of that as well. Just something about singing along with people gives you some sort of comradery or something
A sense of community..
B: That’s it. A sense of community. You’ve put it better than I could.
S: A unified voice.
Name your favorite song about LA. I was just listening to the song California by Wax on the way here and I thought it was very fitting walking in the rain to work. B: For me it’s a more sentimental one, but the song California by Phantom Planet. When that first came out, they came down to New Zealand and we got to meet them and show them around Auckland and so when I first got to hear that song in LA, driving down the 101, all that symbolism came out for me.
S: Probably Walking In LA by Missing Persons. Which is again, another sarcastic song about LA.
My last question is why do you think people should come see you or buy your record?
B: Well, it’s about creating community and we want people to come be part of our community! And sing along! I’ll never push my band on my friends because I’ve got some friends in some shitty bands, I’ll be honest. But I’ve also got some friends in some amazing bands and you have to have your art that’s for you and if people like it, they’ll come. There will be some people who won’t like it, and we really don’t care but if we can find the people who do, and they hear it and they want to sing along with us, that’d be fucking awesome.
S: Yeah, if they hear it and the spirit moves them… We really do put our hearts into these songs and when we play we want to sing out loud. And we hope that people hear that and feel the same way.

Coming in from Washington, DC is Pree, performing at 7 pm. May Tabol, previously from Le Loup, started recording with some of her friends from home. Pree has formed into a four-piece of folk instrumentation with electric and digital elements. The sound is characterized by layered melodies, contagious energy, and pop vocals that you will surely enjoy.

We liked what their myspace had to say about their new record "Folly", so here it is:

"Folly was written and recorded over the course of several heat waves and snow storms by May and her cohorts in a rotating cast of bedrooms, basements, and attics across the District, bearing witness to two foreclosures, a bit of squatting, a larger bit of eviction, and a subsequent life shuffle that would rival that of a wind-addled gypsy moth. The patchwork, guerrilla style of recording which grew out of necessity ultimately served to instill a sense of tension throughout the record, leaving one hanging on despite the imminence of something so delicate falling apart." They will be promoting the four records that they have put out. The most recent one was a 7" called "Inverse Fireworks". Their songs are characterized by higher pitched vocals, quick riffs, fast piano strokes, and bass and drums to match. It almost reminds us of playing a video game on speed. HUME is following along similar strides as bands like Delicate Steve, Zach Hill of Hella, and Dustin Wong of Ponytail; but more on the pop side. Bill Callahan - Apocalypse

Easily my favorite album of the year, Apocalypse showcases Bill Callahan's ability to ride the fine line between vulnerability and confidence. The candor of his voice throughout is intoxicating and I find myself constantly craving it. Lyrically, this record has to be up there with the finest from Gil Scott-Heron, Leonard Cohen, and Nick Drake, but could also find a life of it's own in a book à la Allen Ginsberg. In my opinion, this is a must to own in any record collection.

We were having a hard time getting the bio for this guy, because every one that we found was in Spanish or French. But here is what we found in English...Adan Jodorowsky got his inspiration for music from his mentor, George Harrison. Harrison taught Adan guitar at a young age, and after a stint as an actor and composer in French films, he started his solo career as Adanowsky. In his songs you will hear an influence from his roots, by the way he sings in his three languages, Spanish, French and English.

"Amador" is his third solo release, but his U.S. debut album. The songs are dark, romantic, and all about love. The album runs from "seductive cosmic folk to funky cabaret" and features Devendra Banhart in "You Are The One". Rob from Phoenix co-produced the album with Adan, and it was mixed by Devendra. Los Angeles based duo, VUM, will be coming in to promote their sophomore album, "Night Sun". After getting married, Christopher and Jennifer started to record this album to follow in the footsteps of their first album, "Strange Attractor". The album is out on Secret Lodge Recordings and can be bought in store as well as on the band's bandcamp.

VUM will provide psychedelic drones with haunting vocals, and every once in a while they may even throw in a gong. Backed by reverbed guitar riffs, etherial organ sounds, and constant hits of a tambourine, the song "Strange God" exhibits a psychedelic glow of minimalistic proportions that even your grandma may appreciate. Come by for this in-store, and buy the record or you will miss out on awesomeness.

Calling all Air-Guitarist's!

On November 12th from 8-10 pm there will be an air-guitar competition in conjunction with a solo art exhibition by Jocelyn Foye at Kristi Engle Gallery. Our very own Neil will be judging the competition as well as DJing the event. We are looking for 3 more air guitar champs to volunteer to compete the night of the show! The cash prize is $150 plus the collection at the door. The competitors will need to come with a 90 second section of one song.

The three finalists will interact with the artwork by performing on a bed of clay which will be made after the opening of the exhibition.

TONIGHT: KXSC Radio Presents In-Store w/ Tennis System @ 7pm

Coming into the OV loft tonight are Los Angeles locals, Tennis System, at 7 pm. A band that had a reputation for shutting down shows due to the wall of noise reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine, is now getting recognition for their noisy, dream pop romanticism. Influenced by Nirvana and the Jesus and Mary Chain, as well as the romantic nature of Wavves and Best Coast, the band has a melodic sound, "full of woe, optimism, and yearning."

Tennis System will be coming in to promote their new release, "Teenagers". You will hear defiance, reminiscent of their influences, but with a catchy undertone that will make you dance and sing along. This record will build from a noise experiment, to a shoegazy sound, and ultimately end up with the catchy stylings of "Hey, We Tried". We like that this record shows the band's variety as well as provides an experience for the listener. Come by and check Tennis System out, and pick up the rekkid.

Hacienda is the first band for the night, playing at 7 pm here in the lovely Origami loft.

Hacienda has been getting a lot of buzz in the Texas music scene and beyond. Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys got a hold of this band's demos and their lives were instantly changed. They previously toured with The Black Keys and Dr. Dog, but lately they have been recording at Dan's studios in Ohio for their upcoming release. They will be bringing in test pressings of their 7" record, "Savage" for everyone who attends the in-store. As well as doing some other rad giveaways. This show will be one sure to uplift and enlighten. Come in at 7 pm, don't miss them!

Youth Lagoon will go on at 8 pm. It is sure to be packed, so make sure you get here early to make it into the store. If not you may have to watch from the curb!

What more can we say about Trevor Powers? He is very introspective, likes to record songs in his bedroom, has just recently quit his job at Urban Outfitters, and dropped out of school. This guy is twenty-two years old and is already turning into an instant indie-rock celebrity. Go on any of the Pitchforks and Spins of this world and you will find something about Trevor. But its not all just hype, Youth Lagoon is really a wonderful project and the album "The Year of Hibernation" is a completely entertaining listen.

The songs on "The Year of Hibernation" sound like innocent melodic ballads, but have a haunting twist. This is the perfect record to put on when you want to listen to something that will chill you out, but not bore you for a minute. We really think this project is going in a positive direction. Make sure you come into this in-store, buy the record, and meet Trevor.

Twenty-two year old, Trevor Powers, seems to be an overnight sensation. With the release of his album "The Year of Hibernation", he has been getting a lot of hype from all the blogs around. He has even already sold out his show coming up at the Echo. This kid is going places! In fact, he dropped out of school, quit his job at Urban Outfitters, and launched his first U.S. tour. Trevor says that the record is really like his own journal for people to see inside of his head. Just a kid dealing with heartache, and the anxiety of getting older. This in-store is going to be so awesome.

"The Year of Hibernation" sounds sweet and innocent at first glance, but really has some haunting turns with dark lyrics. You can feel this kid's passion through the songs of this record. Here's a little known fact about at least 2 of the Origami employees: we're fairly obsessed with all things scary. We're not talking "your racist grandma" scary, we're talking ghost in the attic scary! Ghost stories, legends, haunted houses - you name it, we love it. So in honor of our (maybe I should speak for myself on this one..) favorite holiday, we decided to pick out our favorite spine-chilling records that we have in stock. Y'know.. to get you in the mood. Cerebral Ballzy - S/T

I knew nothing about this band before buying the record. I loved the cover and the fake Pitchfork review that says "We hate this band." On top of all that, they have songs called, "Don't Tell Me What To Do," "Cutting Class" and Sk8 All Day." When I got the record home and put it on, my ears were bombarded by the grimiest skate punk I've heard from a new band in a while. Reminiscent of the Gorilla Biscuits (without the sing-alongs), and Teen Idles, this record is fairly perfect to shotgun beers and make bad decisions to.

I guarantee that you'll have a love/hate relationship with this band!

Long Beach based band, Brook Lee Catastrophe is coming in TONIGHT to the OV loft! This band formed from two friends, Brook and Paul, collaborating on a record together. The Catastrophe was formed and has toured all around the Los Angeles venues. They have a folk, bluegrass style that takes you back to your Americana roots.

The Brook Lee Catastrophe is an American folk rock band, that incorporates textures of country, bluegrass, and gospel. The songs are made up of thick rhythms, infectious guitar hooks, and sing-a-long choruses. Make sure you come by @ 7 pm to see the Catastrophe and grab the counterpart to "American Hotel" entitled "Motel Americana."

TONIGHT! Hello Electric is coming in from Portland to share their musical styling with our OV audience. Kirk Ohnstad started Hello Electric in college producing jams entirely on hardware and an eight track digital recorder. Kirk then expanded to include members Zachary and Henry to create a multi-instrumental sound. They are known for their dynamic, dark live show, so you will regret coming in to see this live in-store!

Hello Electric's songs make us feel like we are deep in a dream. This record is characterized by dark beats, heavy synth, and charging vocals. It is a must listen, and you will wish you had been here if you miss this in-store. Beware, the video below is slightly NSFW. Tonight we are throwing our first ever CMJ party with our LA friends Spaceland Productions/The Echo, Dirty Laundry, and Indigenous called Lost Angeles!

The event showcases some of the bands we are most stoked about coming out of the Left Coast at the moment. Just about everyone has been picking these bands as must-sees at CMJ this year and are excited to have them all play under one roof. If you are in town don't miss this. The line-up features:

Weekend (Slumberland) :: These guys really know how to lay on the thick swirling psych-inspired guitars and mesmerize your senses. They have just released their follow-up to the superbly excellent Slumberland release, Sports, with the EP, Red. The band just has a way with presenting sonic overload in a tasteful way that gets us Origami kids all gushy inside. The band plays at 12:15 am
Weekend - Hazel by Slumberland Records

Bleached (Art Fag/Suicide Squeeze) :: From the ashes of Mika Miko, sisters Jessica and Jennifer Clavin, further their experimentation with a perfectly crafted blend of punk, noise, pop, and surf. Bleached play at 11:30 pm.

Audacity (Burger/Volar) :: Part of the insanely amazing Long Beach music scene, Audacity bring a hefty and sweaty burst of energy. Their garage punk has been tantalizing crowds anywheres from backyard keggers to the stages of FYF Fest and of course in our loft. The perfect band to close out our show at 1am.

Guards (3 Syllables) :: Now based in Brooklyn, but originally based in LA, Guards brand of vocally ghosted out brash and beautiful indie rock is on the verge of breaking out. It's the kinda stuff we wanna listen to with a bottle of Jameson in one hand and our dancing partner in the other. Guards play at 10:45 pm.

Fidlar (White Iris) :: These guys are our favorite skate punk band right now. They just slay. Their live energy just makes you want to run around like crazy with beer flying in the air and soaking the entire crowd (well in our head anyway). Fidlar plays at 10:00 pm

Races (French Kiss/Jaxart) :: We've been rocking their 7" out on Jaxart a lot this year and are eagerly anticipating hearing a full length's worth of songs from these guys. They have a large and brooding sound with layered strings and synths that seem to perch the vocals in the heavens above. Races play at 9:15 pm
Big Broom/Living Cruel And Rude 7 Inch by RACES

Tropical Popsicle (Volar) :: Don't take their name too literally. This band is full of dark haunting synths and soundscapes and 60's art-rock vocals. It's the best of what we like to call June Gloom. The band barely has a 7" out and is already touring with Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Crystal Antlers, Iceage, and Times New Viking. Get there early because you'll be bummed if you miss it. Tropical Popsicle play at 8:30 pm
